LinkedIn limits overview

Wondering - “How many connection requests can I send on LinkedIn?” Here’s a simple, up-to-date overview of LinkedIn's limits:

  • Maximum LinkedIn connections: 30,000
  • LinkedIn daily invitations limit: 30
  • LinkedIn weekly invitation limit: 200
  • Messages: 150 per day
  • InMail: 1000 per day
  • Open InMails: 200 per week + 50 credits for premium accounts
  • Message requests: 400 per week
  • Profile visits: some text
    • 80 per day
    • 150 per day for Premium users
    • 1000 per day for Sales Navigator profiles‍
  • Likes, endorsements, follows: some text
    • 50 per day for Basic accounts
    • 100 per day for Premium accounts

These are general guidelines for different LinkedIn account types, but there's more to the story!

Below, we’ll explore each limit in detail, provide strategies to maximize your outreach while staying within these boundaries, and share tips to keep your LinkedIn account away from the block list.

1. Connection requests

LinkedIn connection request limit is around 100 requests per week, with some flexibility based on your Social Selling Index (SSI) score. A higher SSI score might grant you a slightly higher allowance. The connection requests limit resets seven days after you send your first invitation.

Our suggestion: To make the most out of your outreach efforts, send personalized connection requests to people in your industry or niche. Prioritize building genuine connections over sending a high volume of requests, which can look like spammy behavior and get you banned from LinkedIn.

2. Total connections

The limit is 30,000 connections. There's no direct way to increase this limit, but you can periodically evaluate your network and remove inactive or irrelevant connections. You’ll stay within the limit and maintain a more relevant network.

3. Messages

There are two types of messages on LinkedIn: direct messages and InMails. The limits vary depending on the type:

  • Messages: No official limit, but more than 150 messages daily might raise red flags.
  • InMails: Limits vary based on your subscription (up to 1,000 with Recruiter). InMails allows you to message people outside your network.

To maximize outreach, personalize each message and tailor it to the recipient. Offer value, whether it's sharing relevant insights or offering help. It’s okay to send a follow-up message, but if someone doesn't respond or asks you to stop contacting them, respect their choice.

4. Profile views

Profile views on LinkedIn refer to the number of times your LinkedIn profile has been viewed by other LinkedIn users. The limits are the following:

  • Basic (free) accounts: 80 profiles
  • Premium accounts: 150 profiles
  • Sales Navigator: 1,000 Sales Navigator profiles & 150 regular LinkedIn profiles.

To view more profiles, the best option is to upgrade from a basic to a premium account. This will allow you to identify more potential leads, learn about your network, and gauge your profile's effectiveness.

Sales Navigator allows for up to 1,000 Sales Navigator profile views per day and 150 regular LinkedIn profile views. It’s especially useful for lead-gen agencies focusing on B2B sales and lead generation.

How to send more invitations and messages on LinkedIn

Increasing LinkedIn outreach doesn’t involve cheating the system. Shortcuts soon turn into dead ends, so we choose to play by the rules.

By understanding LinkedIn's limitations and working within them, you can dramatically increase the number of high-quality connections you make and messages you send, all while staying on LinkedIn's good side.

Using organic tactics

Before doubling down on your outreach efforts, you can implement several organic tactics to attract more connection invites and messages from your target audience. Here are a few things you can do:

  • Build your network:some text
    • Like, comment, and share posts from your network—it will keep you top-of-mind and foster deeper connections
    • Deploy these LinkedIn best practices to really elevate your game on LinkedIn
    • Find groups related to your industry and participate in discussions, as it’s a great way to connect with potential collaborators and clients and demonstrate your expertise
  • Advanced search:some text
    • Utilize LinkedIn's advanced search filters to target your outreach by location, industry, job title, and other criteria to connect with the right people
    • Learn how to find qualified leads using Sales Navigator
    • Connect with decision-makers—search for individuals with hiring authority or relevant roles at companies you'd like to connect with

Using automation tools

While relying on organic tactics to attract your target audience and leads on LinkedIn is fundamental, LinkedIn automation tools can become powerful allies in scaling your efforts efficiently.

When I do LinkedIn outreach, I leverage these tools to increase my network reach, build genuine connections, and save my time and resources, while operating within LinkedIn’s guidelines.

Here’s how I use HeyReach to reduce the risk of my account being flagged or suspended for exceeding activity limits.

1. Account rotation

HeyReach lets me connect multiple LinkedIn accounts into one campaign, which helps me send hundreds of connection requests per day much faster, as I don’t have to log in and out and create multiple campaigns. By rotating accounts, I make sure I’m staying within the limits, while still being able to reach out to as many people as possible.

2. Cloud-based security

Operating in a secure cloud environment is key when doing LinkedIn outreach. I rely on HeyReach to protect my data with robust security measures and sophisticated algorithms that mimic real human behavior. The risk of my outreach being flagged as automated is this way reduced.

3. Automated workflows

Managing and doing outreach from dozens of LinkedIn profiles would be a super repetitive and time-consuming task, which is why automation is a must if you’re using tools to boost your outreach. I use HeyReach’s sequence builder to automate my workflows (containing 10+ steps) and even test different messaging through A/B testing to see what works best for my audience.

How to scale LinkedIn outreach

HeyReach

Building a strong network on LinkedIn takes time and effort, especially if you're targeting a large audience.

Here is how I can scale outreach efficiently using HeyReach:

Step 1: Adding senders

I begin by adding sender accounts—the LinkedIn profiles from which I’ll be sending out messages and connection requests. Adding multiple senders allows me to manage a larger outreach volume while staying within LinkedIn's activity limits per account.

Step 2: Creating campaigns

I set up targeted campaigns by defining my audience, writing personalized messages (or using pre-saved templates), and scheduling when these messages should be sent. If needed, I can customize each campaign to target different user segments with relevant messaging.

Step 3: Using a unified inbox

In HeyReach, I can manage all replies and interactions through a unified inbox. This feature consolidates responses from all sender accounts into a single interface and makes it easier to monitor and respond to engagement without switching between accounts. I usually add tags, filters, and reminders to navigate through different profiles and audience segments more easily, but it’s really handy to have all conversations in one place.

How to improve profile credibility on LinkedIn

Improving your profile credibility on LinkedIn is crucial for making a strong impression and enhancing your networking capabilities. Here are some key strategies:

Optimize your LinkedIn profile

Ensure senders’ LinkedIn profiles are filled out completely and professionally:

  • Include a clear, professional headshot with good lighting
  • Create a compelling headline and summarize their skills and experience - for example, “Experienced Digital Marketing Specialist | SEO & Content Marketing Expert”
  • Write an engaging “About” section, outlining their achievements and skills. Include relevant keywords to improve profile visibility, steering clear from generic descriptions that can apply to dozens of other people on LinkedIn
  • Keep the “Experience” section updated, with clear and concise descriptions of roles and responsibilities

Improve SSI score

LinkedIn's SSI measures how well you establish your professional brand, find the right people, engage with insights, and build relationships on the platform.

You can boost your SSI by:

  • Sending personalized connection requests to people within the same industry or related fields
  • Posting articles, commenting on posts in your field, and sharing updates that add value to your network
  • Participating in discussions and groups related to your industry

If you’re unsure what your SSI score is, you can track it weekly on this link provided by LinkedIn.

Publish relevant content

Share and publish articles, posts, and updates related to your industry regularly to demonstrate your expertise and stay visible in your network’s feed. Aim to be consistent and post at least once a week. Engaging content attracts views, likes, and comments, further establishing credibility.

Make it a habit to respond to comments to foster discussions and increase post engagement—some posts on LinkedIn can live on the feed for weeks after the publication thanks to the discussion in the comments.

See, for example, how professionals from different industries approach sharing their expertise on LinkedIn:

  • Mike Gallardo, sales leader, shares tips on how to structure cold outreach messages, demonstrating his expertise in the field
  • Donal O’Riordan, sales expert and consultant, talks about mistakes to avoid in outreach messages
  • Pam Didner, B2B marketing consultant, regularly shares engaging and helpful content
  • Katelynn Minott, CPA, shares a healthy mix of personal stories, tax-related tips, and visual posts to build relationships with her followers

Buy a LinkedIn Premium account

Upgrading to a LinkedIn Premium can improve your networking capabilities with additional features like:

  • InMail: Allows you to contact anyone on LinkedIn directly, which is especially useful for reaching out to potential clients or mentors
  • Profile views: See who’s viewed your profile, enabling you to reach out and expand your network
  • Advanced search: Use detailed filters to find and connect with the right people more efficiently

This investment is valuable for agencies looking to expand their professional reach and visibility.

What happens if you breach LinkedIn rules

Breaching LinkedIn's rules can lead to several consequences, as LinkedIn actively monitors for behavior that violates its user agreement.

LinkedIn recognizes the following behavior as spamming and might flag your account if you:

  • Send too many connection requests, especially to people who are outside your network
  • Send too many messages, especially unsolicited
  • Visit too many profiles, as this can be seen as scraping or stalking

Initially, LinkedIn might temporarily restrict your account. You might be unable to send messages and connection requests or even be limited in viewing profiles. This is usually LinkedIn’s first step in alerting you that your activity appears unusual.

Your account might undergo a review process, during which LinkedIn assesses your activity to determine if it violates their User Agreement, Professional community policies, or Privacy policy.

In severe cases, or if violating behaviors continue after warnings, you can be banned from LinkedIn. You’ll know you are in so called LinkedIn jail if you try to log in to your account and see the message “Your account is restricted.”

LinkedIn limits

Your “punishment” can be temporary, permanent, or irreversible:

  • Temporary restrictions will be removed after several hours to one week. The time will be indicated on the "Your LinkedIn account has been temporarily restricted" message that appears after you log in. The restriction time depends on whether this is your first or repeat restriction.
  • Permanent restrictions occur after several temporary ones. Contact LinkedIn support to remove the ban. If you can’t contact them from your account, use your colleague’s or friend’s account to explain your case. Another option is to contact @LinkedInHelp on Twitter. We strongly advise you not to make a new LinkedIn account, whichever option you choose, as this is a violation of their terms of service.
  • Irreversible restrictions lead to deleting your LinkedIn account, so you’ll forever lose all your connections, content, and endorsements. After deleting your profile, your connections will see a “This profile is not available on LinkedIn” message.

How to get out of LinkedIn jail?

If you find your LinkedIn account blocked, there are several steps you can take to address the issue and potentially restore your account.

First, determine why your account was restricted. LinkedIn usually notifies you about the restriction and provides a reason for it.

If you've been flagged for excessive activity, such as sending too many connection requests or messages, reduce your activity immediately. This shows LinkedIn that you are taking their warning seriously.

Visit LinkedIn’s User Agreement and Best Practices pages to fully understand the rules and prevent future violations.

If your account has been restricted, LinkedIn typically provides an option to appeal the decision.

In your appeal:

  • Clearly state your case and acknowledge any mistakes.
  • Explain how you use LinkedIn and how important it is for your professional activities.
  • Show that you understand the rules and will adhere to them moving forward.

If your account is temporarily restricted, sometimes the best course of action is simply to wait until the restriction is lifted, ensuring that you comply with LinkedIn’s guidelines going forward.

If LinkedIn support declines your appeal, you’ll no longer be able to use the platform for any purpose.

To avoid getting flagged or banned:

  • Keep your connection requests, messages, and profile visits within reasonable limits
  • Personalize messages and connection requests to reduce the risk of being marked as spam
  • Regularly review LinkedIn’s policies and ensure your activities align with their guidelines.
